A New Sound Coming Out of Detroit
Can You Hear Me Now

For forty years, the mention of music coming from Detroit immediately conjured up the Motown sound image.  There is now a new Detroit sound and the architect is Michael Fowler.

His new CD release is entitled Can You Hear Me Now by the group EXP, of which he is both the band leader and songwriter.  The band’s name derives from Fowler’s newly launched recording company, based in the Motor City, Excellent Productions.

EXP is a unique collaboration between multiple artists and producer.  The innovative approach to the traditional band allows each member a platform and highlights the creative talent of the group, on both an individual and collective front, offering the listener a seasoned new sound that has the ability to regenerate and endure the test of time.

Can You Hear Me Now is a demonstration of music not of the usual Detroit vein.  The ensemble, whose results are remarkably displayed on this inspired CD, are producing music that fuses neo-soul, smooth jazz and R & B into a melody that is taking the city by storm and making EXP its number one act.

Fowler is probably the only musician/producer whose career is credited to a cereal commercial.  As a kid, he liked the Sugar Crisp commercials which featured an animated character named Sugar Bear who played the banjo and sang.  Fowler wanted a banjo to impersonate the bear, but his Dad bought him a guitar instead.  Good move on the Dad’s part or Fowler’s excellent music might not be on the airways.

Fowler’s first break came when he was sixteen years old and was professional enough on the guitar that he was looking for gigs and willing to play for free.  The older, more experienced musicians around Detroit admired his style and kept him busy.  As he advanced in age and statue, he performed with the likes of renowned violinist Regina Carter and G-Moe, the guitarist for Earth Wind & Fire.

It finally came into his focus that he had the ability to change people’s lives through his music by uplifting and encouraging them.  It is also not unusual for him to have an element of motivational speaking at his performances, to pull the audience in and make them laugh or inspire and enlighten them.

Not only has this music made inroads in Detroit, but the sound is catching on elsewhere.  Jackie Anderson has a mid-day Jazz radio show on WJAB-FM in Huntsville, Alabama.  When she heard samples of the CD, she quickly sought out EXP to add the CD to the stations play list.  RadioIndy.com screens thousands of songs by indie artists, focusing on musicianship, songwriting and recording quality.  The best artists are certified as RadioIndy Gold Artists.  EXP has received this distinction.

RadioIndy had this to say about EXP, “On ‘Can You Hear Me Now,’ EXP shows that their musical abilities are quite extraordinary.  The sweet and soulful vocals and slow jazz music are a perfect mix of eloquent sounds.  The lyrics on ‘Can You Hear Me Now’ are sweet and powerful.  On the track, ‘Love Shine,’ an exquisite saxophone lead makes the song the perfect smooth jazz experience.  If you would like a cross between Jill Scott and Miles Davis, then you would love EXP!”

Copies of this exciting new sound, on CD, can be obtained at cdbaby.com, amazon.com and indierhythm.com.
